Medics are warning of possible side effects from certain hair treatments after a young woman suffered kidney injuries following a session at a hair salon.

According to an article published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine, a 26-year-old Tunisian woman suffered three acute kidney injuries between June 2020 and July 2022. The letter to the editor, written by French doctors, linked certain straightening and straightening hair products to kidney damage.

The woman in the case study had no health problems when she sought medical attention. When she went to the doctor, she was suffering from vomiting, fever, diarrhea and back pain.

“Each episode of acute kidney injury coincided with a hair treatment at the same salon on the day of symptom onset,” the journal letter said.

“The patient reported a burning sensation followed by ulcers on the scalp with each procedure.”

Upon examination, medical staff discovered that her blood tested positive for elevated plasma creatinine levels. Plasma creatinine is a waste product that comes from muscles – when it enters the blood, it is filtered out by the kidneys.
