WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A Republican-led U.S. House committee plans to debate impeachment charges against the Democratic president on Tuesday. Joe Bidenthe country’s top border official, a nearly unprecedented move that comes as political tensions over immigration intensify.

Border security is a central issue for Republican voters concerned about a record number of migrants crossing the border illegally since Biden took office in 2021 and the party has made it a priority in the run-up to the November 5 election which will decide white control. House and Congress.
Republicans blame Biden for abandoning the restrictive policies of former Republican President Donald Trump, his party’s leading contender to challenge Biden.
Mayorkas – a former federal prosecutor – defended his record on immigration and his commitment to government service in a letter to be sent Tuesday to Rep. Mark Green, Republican chairman of the Homeland Committee.
“I assure you that your false accusations do not disturb me or distract me from the mission of law enforcement and broader public service to which I have devoted the majority of my career and to which I remain dedicated ” Mayorkas wrote.
