UPDATED Former Sunbury Hare Chief Pleads Guilty to Theft From Americus Hose Company

April 3—SUNBURY — Former Sunbury Police Chief Brad Hare pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing nearly $7,000 from the safe at the Americus Hose Company in Sunbury.

Hare, 47, of Walnut Street, Sunbury, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft by unlawful taking before Northumberland County Senior Judge Harold F. Woelfel Jr. A sentencing date will be set an once the preliminary investigation is completed.

The first offense carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $10,000, while the second and third offenses carry a maximum sentence of two years in prison and a fine of $5,000. The plea deal, if accepted by Woelfel, would result in the dismissal of the theft by unlawful taking charge.

The terms of the plea agreement will be determined at the conclusion of the preliminary hearing, according to Senior Deputy Attorney General Jaime Keating of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office.

Hare worked in the department for 22 years and was named police chief in November 2019 by former Mayor Kurt Karlovich.

In August, Hare was fired as police chief by Sunbury Mayor Josh Brosious without any explanation. Board members, without comment or discussion, on October 9, then accepted Hare’s retirement.

The arrest took place two days later, on October 11. State police said Hare allegedly used his role as secretary of Americus Hose Company, 100 Linden St., Sunbury, to gain access to the fire company’s office and steal nearly $6,924 from the safe organisation. . Hare has already paid back the money he allegedly took.

Keating noted that Hare made full restitution during the preliminary hearing. Hare was going through “certain circumstances in his life” which would be examined in more detail in the pre-sentence investigation.

The plea agreement was reached after consultation with the victims and the state agent who filed the complaint, Keating said.

Hare also told the judge he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder for which he was receiving treatment.
