Ukraine Crisis: Call for a four-day truce on the eve of Easter

Significantly, Easter will be celebrated in Ukraine and Russia in the next five days, bringing together Orthodox Christians in both countries.

Secretary-General Guterres told reporters in New York on Tuesday that Easter is a season of renewal, revival and hope.

“This is a time to reflect on the meaning of suffering, renunciation, death – and rebirth. It is also a moment of unity. ”

The UN chief said that this year, however, the situation is different. Orthodox Holy Week is being celebrated in the shadow of a war that completely denies this Easter message.

Instead of celebrating New Life, Easter is also being attacked by the Russians in eastern Ukraine.

“The intensive presence of military forces and the weapons capability make this battle more violent, bloody and destructive.”

The UN chief expressed outrage, saying that compared to the suffering that the common people have suffered so far, the horrific events that are feared in the future may leave him behind.

“This cannot be allowed to happen.”

The Secretary General said that the lives of millions of people are at stake. Many goodwill attempts have been made so far for a ceasefire in Ukraine, but they have failed.

Four-day stay

United Nations Secretary General Has called for a four-day standoff on humanitarian grounds on the occasion of Holy Week, which will begin on Holy Thursday and end on Easter Sunday, April 24.

This pause in battle will create the conditions necessary to accomplish two important objectives.

He called on peace activists from all sides and around the world to join the Easter appeal, save lives and stop the bloodshed and destruction.

First, in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross, to provide a safe passage for all those who wish to avoid confrontation now and in the days to come.

Second, in addition to the ongoing humanitarian relief operation, the halt to deliver life-saving humanitarian aid to the worst-affected areas, such as Mariupol, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk.

The size of human needs has increased in the current situation, people do not have food, water, medicine or medicine to treat the sick or injured.

Huge needs

The UN chief assured that the United Nations is ready to send humanitarian relief convoys to the needy areas during this period.

It is reported that more than 12 million people in Ukraine are in need of humanitarian assistance, with one third of the population in Mariupol, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk.

The UN chief has raised the possibility that the number could exceed 1.5 million, which would be 40 per cent of the Ukrainian population in the country.

Assistance has reached 2.5 million people in the last seven weeks, many of them in the eastern region.

The UN chief has called on Ukraine and Russia to pave the way for “calm these guns and rescue those facing immediate danger” in light of “these life-threatening causes”.

The Secretary-General said that in the four-day period, efforts would have to be made to move the dialogue forward in order to save lives and end suffering in Ukraine.

The UN chief has said that the window of dialogue and peace must be opened and faith must be maintained in the meaning and message of Easter.
