Transfer News: How Enzo Fernandez will fit in at Chelsea
With the addition of Fernandez, Chelsea have now spent over £500million during the summer transfer window and the winter transfer window in total. Todd Boehly said Chelsea were serious and would do anything to get their season started again.
Chelsea tried to sign Enzo Fernandez earlier this month but Benfica wanted his €120m (£105.9m) release clause paid in full. It looked like the Blues were ready to drop their interest in the World Cup winner but eventually signed him for a British record.
Chelsea even paid Benfica more than Fernandez’s release clause as they had to comply with Financial Fair Play rules. The Blues will pay the Portuguese giants’ fee in installments which would see him successfully comply with FFP rules.
Considered one of the best young midfielders in world football, Fernandez would be an exciting addition to Chelsea’s midfield which was in desperate need of top class additions. Jorginho having joined Arsenal on deadline day, Enzo Fernandez is said to be a ready-made replacement for the Italy international.
Enzo Fernandez is able to play both number six and number eight thanks to his exceptional technicality and elegance. He played a key role in helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and was also crowned the tournament’s Young Player of the Year.
At just 22, Fernandez would be a solid long-term option for Chelsea in the middle of the park. He is likely to become a regular in midfield alongside Mateo Kovacic or N’Golo Kante when he returns from injury. The Argentine has what it takes to become the Blues’ kingpin in midfield, something they’ve been missing since Frank Lampard.
