The Different Forms of Kindness, Emilia Perez

The European Film Academy has selected the first 29 productions in the running for the European Film Awards 2024.

The selection, announced Wednesday, is a list of highlights from this year’s festival, including Cannes winners Jacques Audiard, Coralie Fargeat and Yorgos Lanthimos. Emilia Perez, The Substance And Types of Kindnessrespectively; Rich Peppiatt’s hit at Sundance Ball joint; and the Berlinale favourites Passage by Levan Akin, The Devil’s Bath Austrian directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz and German melodrama Dying by Matthias Glasner.

By far the most commercially successful title in the selection is Paola Cortellesi’s Italian comedy-drama. There is still tomorrowwhich dominated the local box office in 2023, selling more tickets in Italy than Barbie did.

To be eligible for the 2024 EFAs, a feature film must have been screened for the first time between 1 June 2023 and 31 May 2024 and have a European director. Non-European directors with EU refugee status, or those who have lived in Europe and worked in the European film industry for at least five consecutive years, are also eligible. For example, Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, who recently fled Iran and found refuge in Berlin, is also in the running for the EFAs with his latest film, The seed of the sacred fig tree.

The selection, established by the EFA board, represents the 26 European countries, including members of the European Union and non-EU countries, such as Turkey (Passage) and post-Brexit Britain (Andrea Arnold Bird). The selection committee submits the titles to the 5,000 voting members of the European Academy as potential nominees for this year’s awards. A second selection of titles will be announced in September.

The nominees for the 2024 European Film Awards will be announced on November 5. The 37th edition of the European Film Awards will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland on December 7.
