Tennessee Republican sued for falsely identifying Kansas man as Chiefs parade shooter and ‘illegal’

Kansas man sues rep. Tim BurchettR-Tenn., because of social media posts that falsely identified him as an undocumented immigrant and one of the shooters in the attack. Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade which became fatal last month.

The trialfiled by Denton Loudermill Jr.’s attorneys in federal court in Kansas City, Kansas, alleges that Loudermill suffered damages of more than $75,000 as a result of a “misrepresentation” of him appearing on the personal X account of the Tennessee Republican.

“At no time was Plaintiff an ‘alien,’ an ‘illegal alien,’ nor a ‘shooter,’ and claims to the contrary were false and circulated widely among Defendant’s supporters,” the lawsuit states.

Burchett posted an image of Loudermill on X in February, identifying him as “one of the shooters at the Kansas City Chiefs victory parade” and “an illegal alien.”

According to the lawsuit, this post was online on February 15 and reposted more than 21,000 times and had been viewed 7.2 million times as of the morning of February 18. Burchett later deleted the post, stating in a post new that he falsely identified Loudermill as an undocumented immigrant, while suggesting that Loudermill was “one of the shooters.”

Citing Loudermill’s mental distress and death threats he received following those posts, the lawsuit seeks a jury trial and damages for spreading falsehoods under a Kansas protection law of private life.

A spokesperson for Burchett did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday evening.

An attorney for Loudermill declined to comment when asked if he was seeking a specific amount in damages.

Federal courts require cases seeking damages between people in different states, like this one, to exceed $75,000. Loudermill resides in Olathe, Kansas, according to the lawsuit.
