Steve Martin quickly became an internet favorite for playing it when Saturday Night Live returns in September.
However, Martin made it clear in an interview with the Los Angeles Times On Wednesday, he does not want to play the politician.
He told the publication that for a long time SNL Producer Lorne Michaels contacted him Wednesday morning with an offer to play Walz, but he declined.
“I wanted to say no, and he wanted me to say no,” Martin said.
There is a notable reason for this. “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impersonator. You need someone who can really embody the character.’ I was chosen because I have gray hair and glasses.”
Martin currently stars in the hit Hulu series There are only murders in the building alongside Martin Short and Selena Gomez.
He and Short are also touring with their live comedy show, The Dukes of Funnytown!this fall, which could have interfered with SNLProduction schedule of
In fact, as the LA Times noted, Deadline reported earlier this month that Maya Rudolph had pushed back filming on her Apple TV+ series Booty to reprise his role as Harris in SNL.
“It’s ongoing,” Martin told the LA Times of his role as a political figure on the sketch comedy show. Martin has been known to host or appear on the show frequently since the 1970s.
“It’s not like you do it once, get applause and never do it again,” he continued. “Again, they need a real imitator to do that. They’re going to find someone really, really good. I’d have a hard time.”
Martin’s withdrawal from the race could be good news for Parks and recreation star Jim O’Heir, Jim Gaffigan, John Goodman or any of the other actors that people online have also suggested to play the waltz. Only time will tell.
