The sphere returns to U2.
The revolutionary Las Vegas entertainment venue has confirmed that it will present V-U2an immersive concert film directed by Morleigh Steinberg and band member The Edge. Released September 5, the film is billed as a “one-of-a-kind cinematic experience” centered around the iconic band’s first collaboration with U2:UV Attention baby Live at Sphere.
U2 performed to more than 700,000 fans at 40 sold-out concerts from September 2023 to March 2024. The concerts commemorated one of U2’s most successful records, the chart-topping 1991 release. Attention babyperformed in its entirety along with selected tracks from other U2 efforts over the years. V-U2 is the first film to be shot entirely on Big Sky, a high-resolution camera system developed by Sphere Entertainment and designed to give the audience the impression of experiencing the performances live. Also of note: V-U2 uses Sphere’s haptic seating, which uses vibrations so guests can “feel” the music.
“The goal was to give viewers an immersive experience that was as close as possible to a live U2:UV concert, and then some,” The Edge said in a statement. “I’ve never seen a U2 concert. I’m so relieved to have seen one that great.” Steinberg added, “We knew all about the extraordinary capabilities of the technology, but we didn’t know what to expect from the process of making this film. The work became a true collaboration between the band, artists, producers and technology teams. The end result is a cinematic experience that transports viewers into the energy and beauty of the live show.”
V-U2 The film was produced by The Edge, Bono and Adam Clayton with producer Alan Moloney. Stefaan “Smasher” Desmedt, video director of the original show, also served as associate director on the film. Music production was handled by Jacknife Lee and Joe O’Herlihy, U2’s longtime sound director. Andrew Shulkind of Sphere Studios served as director of photography and the project was edited by Robert Rivers Malina of Sphere Studios. Irving and Jeffrey Azoff, who lead U2’s management team, are credited as executive producers on the film.
“V-U2 “This is a one-of-a-kind immersive film that will transport audiences to U2’s groundbreaking concerts at Sphere and make them feel like they’re there,” said Josephine Vaccarello of MSG Entertainment, who oversees live bookings for Sphere. “This concert film was created specifically for Sphere and will utilize the venue’s technologies to create an experience that is only possible in this next-generation entertainment medium.”
Tickets, which start at $100, will go on sale on general public on August 23. After U2, Sphere presented concerts by Phish followed by an extended tour by Dead and Company. Next came the Eagles. On the film side, Sphere also presented Darren Aronofsky’s film Postcard from Earth.
