Sony Sets U.S. Release Date for Animated Feature Film ‘Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom’

Sony Pictures has revealed that the animated feature film Overlord: The Sacred Realmproduced by the company’s specialty streamer Crunchyroll, will be released in theaters in North America on November 8. The film is a continuation of the popular anime series Suzerainwhich adapts the novels of Japanese author Kugane Maruyama.

The Sacred Kingdom picks up where season 4 of the Suzerain The series has ended. The saga tells the story of Momonga, an ordinary employee who finds himself transported into his favorite video game. The film was animated by the Japanese studio Madhouse and covers the arc also known as “Holy Kingdom”.

Sony will release the film in Imax and premium large format in Japanese with English subtitles and dubbing. The film will face Lionsgate’s Christmas comedy on the weekend of November 8. Overlord: The Sacred Realm The film was directed by Naoyuki Ito and the screenplay was coordinated by Yukie Sugawara. Satoshi Tasaki led the character design and animation direction, with illustrations by so-bin and music by Shuji Katayama.

Japanese anime is arriving in U.S. multiplexes with increasing frequency as the industry’s global influence continues to grow. Sony and Crunchyroll have released Blue Lock: Nagi episode in the United States on June 28 (it grossed $1.8 million). And Japanese studio giant Toho is ready to release My Hero Academia: It’s Your Turn in North America on October 11.

Crunchyroll, which Sony acquired in 2021, has enjoyed considerable success in domestic cinema in recent years, with Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes generating $38.1 million in North America and $86.5 million worldwide. A year earlier, the company had released Jujutsu Kaisenwhich grossed $34.5 million in the United States and $166.7 million worldwide.
