Several people found dead in overnight house fires, South Carolina officials say

Two people were found dead in burning buildings Saturday, South Carolina officials said.

The bodies were discovered after house fires were put out in the Midlands area.

Around 1 a.m. HodgesEula Byrd, 78, was pronounced dead after being found in a fire at a home on Miller Road, Greenwood County Coroner » said Sonny Cox.

The cause and manner of Byrd’s death are under investigation, according to Cox. In addition to the coroner’s office, the Greenwood County Fire Department, Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating Byrd’s death.

In an unrelated fire North AugustaA man’s body was discovered in a burning house on Tiger Lily Circle, Aiken County Coroner » said Darryl Ables.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, was found after firefighters went to the home around 2:45 a.m., according to Ables.

An autopsy will be conducted in Newberry to determine the man’s identity and cause of death, and the fire remains under investigation by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Officethe coroner’s office said.

No information on the cause of either fire was available. It is unknown if foul play is suspected.

No other injuries were reported in either fire, but no information was available on the extent of damage to homes or the displacement of other residents.
