Safety First! These Pro-Approved Kitchen Tools Can Prevent Burns, Cuts, and More

Before I started writing about kitchen products for a living, I used them every day as a professional baker. And while few things were as satisfying as pulling a batch of perfectly browned dinner rolls out of the oven, there were also plenty of accidents that could (and did) happen while I was hard at work. So, trust me: Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a home cook, kitchen safety should be a top priority.

Common sense is of course essential: for example, don’t try to put out a grease fire with water! But there are also many ways to avoid mistakes. Do you tend to cut yourself when cutting onions? Those of us who enjoy spending time in the kitchen can agree on one thing: burning our forearms on an oven rack while removing a tray of brownies is the worst. No need to install them, thanks to these clever oven rack protectors. They slide over the edge of the rack to act as a protection, so in case your arm brushes them, they’ll be covered in heat-resistant silicone rather than a hot piece of metal. They can be cut to fit your oven racks, or even those in your toaster oven or air fryer. To install, simply slide them over the front edge of the rack via their open sides, which have little ridges that grip the metal. It’s that easy! And if they get dirty, simply peel them off to clean.

“A real hand/wrist savior!” exclaimed one enthusiastic user“Not only do they protect my hands/wrists from hitting a hot rack when turning or removing food from the oven, but they also act as a “bumper” to protect the door from the edge of the rack. Plus, the red color just looks cool through the oven door!”

My cast iron skillet is one of my most treasured kitchen items, but if you’ve ever used one, you know how hot the handle can get! My mom bought me one of these silicone stocking stuffers a few years ago, and I’ve been using it ever since. It slips right over the handle of the skillet and can provide protection from temperatures up to 450°F. Just remember to remove it if you put your skillet in the oven!

“If you own a cast iron skillet of any size, you need this one!” said one fan“At some point, you’ll reach for the handle of that iron skillet on the stove and realize, too late, that the handle is as hot as the skillet and you’ll burn your hand… Just slip this foldable handle cover over that skillet before you start cooking, and you’ll be able to grip it easily, even when the skillet is HOT!”
