Job Description

A Staff Scientist (Researcher III) position is available in the Materials, Chemical, and Computational Science (MCCS) directorate to support our expanding work in developing novel semiconductor devices based on compound semiconductors and (ultra) wide bandgap semiconductors. The device applications include microelectronics, power electronics, high-temperature and extreme environment electronics, semiconductor detectors 5G communications, solid state lighting, neuromorphic computing, and energy conversion technologies.

This position would support existing and develop new projects in the area of semiconductor devices with a focus on advanced design, fabrication, and characterization, in collaboration with other scientists at NREL working on materials growth and calculations. Primary responsibilities of this position would involve design and cleanroom fabrication of semiconductor devices, and the electrical, optical, mechanical, structural, and thermal characterization of these devices. The duties would also include materials deposition support using semiconductor growth techniques such as pulsed laser deposition, magnetron sputtering, atomic layer deposition. In addition, describing research results in publications and presentation would be required, and the successful candidate will be involved in proposal writing in response to solicitations.

Basic Qualifications Must have a PhD in electrical engineering, physics, materials science, or related field. Prior postdoctoral experience or equivalent industrial experience is preferred

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of scientific technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

Qualified candidates should demonstrate strong research skills (particularly, semiconductor device fabrication and testing) evidenced by a strong publication and/or patent record. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are essential for success in this role. Teamwork and collaboration are also required, including across traditional research disciplines of electrical engineering, physics, and chemistry. The applicant will be expected to partner and team internally and externally, by leveraging existing and building new science and engineering collaborations. In addition, a demonstrated record of mentoring colleagues as well as inclusion and diversity are expected. Demonstrated experience in proposal development and strategic thinking to build new research directions within NREL’s mission space is also expected, as is the ability to balance multiple projects.

Additional Qualifications

Note: We encourage anyone who is interested in this opportunity to apply, even if they do not meet all additional qualifications. We seek dedicated people who believe they have the skills and ambition to succeed at NREL.

Strong candidates are asked to demonstrate the following qualifications.

-demonstrated prior experience in fabrication, characterization, and design of semiconductor devices

-track record in wide band gap semiconductor applications such as power electronics, light emitting diodes, RF transistors, photodetectors

-strong self-motivation, multitasking capability, time-management skills, and a track record in scientific communication

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

A successful candidate would also have a track record in some of the following areas:

-awareness of materials selection and interface design concepts, such as figures of merit, defects and dopants, chemical compatibility, band offsets

-basic knowledge of vacuum deposition and processing techniques, such as RF and DC magnetron sputtering, pulsed laser deposition, atomic layer deposition, and molecular beam epitaxy

-familiarity with advanced materials characterization techniques, such as electron- and x-ray microscopy and spectroscopy

-skills in technology computer aided design (TCAD) and finite element analysis (FEA) simulations of electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance

-prior research related to extreme operating conditions, such as high power and frequency, high temperature, corrosive environments

-prior industrial or equivalent experience in semiconductor device fabrication setting

-interest in learning new experimental methods, including high throughput experimental (combinatorial) approaches, and equipment automation
