Republicans have a slight enthusiasm advantage ahead of the 2024 elections, according to Gallup

Republicans are slightly more enthusiastic heading into the November general election, ahead of Democrats, according to a new poll.

In the survey, published Thursday by Gallup, 59 percent of Republicans said they were more enthusiastic about voting in the upcoming election than in previous years. Fifty-five percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said they felt the same way.

Democrats were more likely to say they were less enthusiastic about voting than Republicans — 42% versus 35%. However, both parties are less enthusiastic about voting today than they were four years ago – as a rematch between President Biden and former President Trump becomes more likely – according to the survey.

At this point in a presidential primary, Democrats’ greatest enthusiasm dates back to 2008, when former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ran against then-Sen. President Obama as they sought to clinch the Democratic nomination.

Americans in general become more enthusiastic about voting as Election Day approaches, with the percentage of “most enthusiastic” reaching about 65% in early November and the percentage of “least enthusiastic” dropping to about 23%, according to the poll. This has been true in every election since 2004, according to pollsters, with the exception of 2016, when Clinton and Trump faced off.

Gallup also noted that there is a link between the American electorate’s electoral enthusiasm and whether they think Trump or Biden would be a good candidate for the job. More than two-thirds of respondents who think either Trump or Biden would be a good fit say they are enthusiastic about voting – 69% and 67%, respectively.

Among the group who didn’t think either candidate was a good choice for president, only 24 percent said they were looking forward to voting in November, according to the survey.

The Gallup poll was conducted between March 1 and 20 among 1,016 American adults. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
