Pakistan: Deputy Speaker of Punjab Legislative Assembly attacked by ‘Lota’

Pakistan’s Punjab Assembly was turned into a battlefield on Saturday after Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) legislators. Scramble Deputy Speaker Dost Mohammad Mazari and threw lota (pots) on him.

According to ReportsDost Muhammad Mazari, the deputy speaker of the Punjab Assembly, was attacked by PTI members sitting on a treasury bench on Sunday with a ‘lota’ as he arrived to preside over the assembly session called to elect a new chief minister.

Opposition PTI lawmakers hurled “lots” at Mazari, attacked him and pulled his hair despite the presence of security guards.

The video of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms. Angry PTI legislators stormed the house and attacked the deputy speaker amid the presence of security guards. The guards were seen trying to save Mazari from being beaten by PTI members.

In another video, it was seen that ‘lota’ was thrown at the shrine as soon as it entered the Punjab Legislative Assembly.

After the melee, Mazari is said to have left the house. The Punjab Assembly session was scheduled to begin at 11:30 am with PML-N’s Hamza Shahbaz and PML-Q’s Chaudhry Parvez Elahi to elect the Chief Minister of Punjab. However, it was delayed due to the reckless behavior of PTI MLAs.

Earlier on April 7, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz held its Punjab Assembly session at a hotel to elect a new Punjab chief minister.

Amidst all the political drama in the country, after the Punjab Assembly building in Pakistan was locked and sealed with barbed wire, opposition legislators led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz elected Hamza Shahbaz as the Chief Minister of Punjab in a planned session. In a private hotel in Lahore.

The legitimacy of the election is in jeopardy as the session was held outside the Punjab Assembly and was attended only by opposition MLAs. Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervez Elahi and Deputy Speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari were not present during the ‘Assembly session’ convened by the PML-N MLAs. Interestingly, the Punjab Assembly Secretariat has not issued any notice regarding session or relocation or so-called election which elected Hamza as the Chief Minister of Punjab.

The session was chaired by PPP MPA Shazia Abid. Abid claimed that she was appointed to the panel of chairpersons for the 40th session of the Punjab Assembly on April 3.

The incident took place after the PPP and PML-N-led joint opposition held a mock session inside the National Assembly on Sunday when Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri ended the actual session.
