Need extra help heating your home this winter? New York HEAP Deadline Extended

Do you need heating help for the last month of cold temperatures and snow in New York?

Governor Kathy Hochul announced Last week, additional home heating assistance is available to low- and moderate-income New York residents who are struggling to pay their heating bills or who may run out of heating fuel or have their utility cut off before the weather is getting warmer.

More than 1.4 million regular Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) benefits totaling $198 million have been awarded since Nov. 1, according to Hochul, and 49,000 emergency HEAP benefits totaling $30 million have been awarded to New Yorkers since January 2.

Here’s what you need to know about the extended application deadline and how to apply for benefits.

What can you apply for?

The deadline for regular and emergency HEAP applications has been extended until April 12.

Eligible homeowners and renters could receive up to $976 in heating assistance based on their income, the size of their household, how they heat their home and whether their household contains vulnerable members.

Typically, eligible households may receive a regular HEAP benefit each winter and may also be eligible for an emergency HEAP benefit. This year, those who have already received a regular benefit and an emergency benefit can apply for an additional emergency benefit.

Support is also always available via the Heating Equipment Repair and Replacement Program and the Benefits of Cleaning and Adjusting HEAP Heating Equipment.

Who is eligible for HEAP benefits?

Your HEAP eligibility and benefits depend on your income, household size, primary heating source, and whether there is a member of your household under age 6, over age 60, or permanently disabled .
