According to media reports, more than 150 people were injured in clashes between Palestinian and Israeli police on Friday. The incidents come at a time when tensions are running high in Israeli-Palestinian relations.

According to the Palestinian Red Cross Crescent, more Palestinians were injured by rubber bullets, stun grenades and police batons fired by Israeli police. Israeli police have also reported that three of their officers were injured in the stoning.

According to reports, the clashes in the compound took place at a time when at least 14 people have been killed in rocket launches in Israel in recent times.

Since then, 25 Palestinians have been killed during raids by Israeli forces on the occupied Palestinian territory – the West Bank.

Call for peace

Stephen Dujarric, a spokesman for UN chief Antonio Guterres, said in a statement on Friday that the secretary-general had appealed to leaders of all parties to help calm the deteriorating situation.

He also stressed that provocative actions should be stopped immediately to prevent further deterioration of the situation at holy places of worship.

The head of the UN said in the message that the status quo in the holy temples of Jerusalem should be maintained and respected.

UN Secretary General It reiterated its support to Palestinians and Israelis in resolving the conflict in accordance with relevant UN resolutions, international law and bilateral agreements.

Avoid provocative rhetoric

In a separate statement, the UN special envoy for the Middle East peace process, Tor Veniceland, called on political, religious and community leaders of all parties to help calm the situation.

He also called on the people to refrain from spreading provocative rhetoric and to speak out against the instigators of the riots.

The special envoy warned that allowing tensions to escalate would increase the risk of the situation becoming more explosive.

He also urged the officials of both the parties to take immediate steps to reduce the tension and prevent further escalation of the situation by extremist elements.

Tor Veniceland maintains close contact with important regional individuals, partners and parties to resolve the situation.
