Mega Millions player misses out on nearly $1 billion – but still wins big in Nebraska

A Mega Millions ticket sold in Nebraska won $1 million, narrowly missing the estimated $977 million jackpot, according to lottery officials.

The ticket matched five winning numbers in the drawing on Friday, March 22, but not in the Mega Ball, the Nebraska Lottery said.

No one won the grand prize, which will amount to one estimated at $1.1 billionwith a cash option of approximately $525 million, for the next drawing on Tuesday, March 26, the national Mega Millions website reported.

The winning numbers were 3, 8, 31, 35 and 44, with a Mega Ball of 16.

More than 10,000 other tickets sold in Nebraska also won prizes ranging from $2 to $1,500 in the drawing, the lottery said.

Mega Millions tickets sold in California, Florida, Illinois, Texas And Virginia also matched five white numbers to win.

To win a jackpot in the Mega Millionsa player must match the five white balls and the golden Mega Ball.

The odds of winning a jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350.

Tickets cost $2 and can be purchased on the day of the drawing, but sales times vary by state.

Drawings take place on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington, DC, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
