Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s childhood friendship and subsequent rise to stardom is the stuff of Hollywood legend, with the two having been introduced by their mothers while growing up just a block and a half apart in Boston, Massachusetts.
It was around this time that the two men began working on their own script for a film you may have heard of: Good Will HuntingIt ended up being the springboard to their brilliant Hollywood careers, catapulting Ben and Matt to worldwide fame in the late ’90s.
26 years later, Ben and Matt are still best friends and two of the most famous actors in the industry.
And Matt reflected on this stark difference during a recent appearance on the Radio Times Podcast with Ben’s brother, Casey Affleck. Reflecting on how “lucky” he’s been with fame, Matt admitted he wouldn’t have been able to handle the “scrutiny” Ben is subjected to.
Casey then noted that Matt had “handled” his rise to fame very well, and Matt said he believed it was a result of devoting himself entirely to his work and ultimately marrying someone who wasn’t famous.
Matt then recalled one of the only times he was photographed by paparazzi while living in New York, saying it was shortly after the birth of his youngest daughter, Stella, in 2010.
Speaking directly about Ben, Matt added: “I can’t imagine living under that kind of scrutiny, and it’s been like that for 25 years. We’ve had parallel careers in a lot of ways, and so I’m fortunate to have been kind of exempt from that part.”
