Cheney served in the House Republican leadership before being ousted in 2021, then lost her 2022 Wyoming primary to a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump. She is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who worked alongside former President George W. Bush.

The former Republican congresswoman made the statement during a conference at Duke University. Describing herself as a “conservative,” she reiterated her position that Trump was a “danger” to democracy.

The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

“I don’t think we have the luxury of putting candidates’ names down, especially in key states,” Cheney told Duke, according to video circulating on X.

“As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I’ve thought a lot about this issue,” she added. “And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, I’m voting for Kamala Harris.”

Cheney was one of two Republican lawmakers who served on the congressional committee investigating the January 6 attack alongside former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger. She also voted to impeach Trump in 2021 over the riot.

She was ring the bell She has not been aware of the potential consequences of a second Trump term for years, but her comments this week marked the first time she has officially endorsed Harris.

Cheney warned last year that there is “no doubt” Trump would refuse to leave office if he wins in November.

Several Republicans have already endorsed Harris, including more than 200 GOP staffers who worked for both Presidents Bush, Sen. John McCain and Sen. Mitt Romney.

Cheney’s former colleague Kinzinger spoke at the Democratic National Convention earlier this month and formally endorsed Harris.
