June Squibb Sundance Comedy Thelma Is Coming to Magnolia .

Magnolia Pictures has secured North American rights to June Squibb’s comedy Thelma, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. A wide theatrical release is planned.

Josh Margolin directed the feature film which follows a 93-year-old grandmother (Squibb) who is scammed by a phone scammer posing as her grandson (Fred Hechinger) and embarks on a perilous quest across Los Angeles , accompanied by an aging friend (the late Richard Roundtree, in one of his last roles) and his motorized scooter, to recover what was taken from him.

Parker Posey, Clark Gregg and Malcolm McDowell also star.

Bed THRthe film review, “Thelma is sweet and poignant, sentimental without being sappy. The simple fact that it gives Squibb the first leading on-screen role of his seven-decade career makes it a satisfying watch.

Bandwagon’s Zoë Worth and Chris Kaye produced the film, alongside Invention Studios’ Nicholas Weinstock, Benjamin Simpson, and Zurich Avenue’s Karl Spoerri and Viviana Vezzani. Executive producers are Squibb, Hechinger and Tobias Gutzwiller.

CAA Media Finance negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
