Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel explains his decision not to host next year’s Oscars.
During his appearance on this week’s show Doing politics In a podcast, Kimmel explained why he didn’t choose to host the 2025 Oscars and opened up about his son’s surgeries and health.
“When I focus on the Oscars, I’m less focused on the show,” he said of his decision. “And I decided I didn’t want to deal with that this year. It was too much last year.”
He added: “You end up pushing everything back until after the Oscars, and you have to do everything you said you were going to do after the Oscars.”
“I did two years and it went well,” he said of his first stint as a host. “I did two more years and it went well. I figured I’d take a little break.”
He added: “I’m all about the Oscars. I think about them morning and night, and when I have ideas, I want to work on them, and then my show that night seems like a nuisance.”

And especially when you think someone is going to be great, the only thing they can do is prove you wrong when they’re hosting the Oscars. So they say it’s a thankless job. And I wouldn’t necessarily describe it that way, because when it’s going well, it’s not. But if it’s not, it’s a tough situation.”
ABC reportedly made offers to Kimmel and John Mulaney, both of whom turned down the opportunity, as first reported. Puck News.
Later in the interview, Kimmel also shared an update on his seven-year-old son, Billy, who has undergone multiple heart surgeries.
“He had his third open heart surgery in May and he’s doing great. You’d never know, except for the scar on his chest, that he had it,” Kimmel said. “He’s a very funny kid and he’s doing great now. Hopefully we’ll never need another surgery of any kind. And thanks to the…
