PHOENIX (AP) — Republican Vice Presidential Candidate J.D. Vance He said Thursday that he regretted that school shootings were a “fact of life” and argued that the United States needed to step up security to prevent more carnage like this week’s. left four dead in Georgia.
“If these psychopaths are going to come after our children, we have to be prepared for it,” Vance said at a rally in Phoenix. “We don’t have to like the reality we live in, but it’s the reality we live in. We have to deal with it.”
A reporter asked the Ohio senator what could be done to stop school shootings. He said further restricting access to guns, as many Democrats advocate, would not be enough to stop the shootings, noting that they occur in states with both lax and strict gun laws. He praised Congress’ efforts to provide more funding to schools for safety.
“I don’t like that this is a reality,” Vance said. “But if you’re a psychopath and you want to make headlines, you know our schools are easy targets. And we need to have more security in our schools. We need to have more security so that if a psychopath wants to walk through the front door and kill a bunch of kids, he can’t do it.”
Vance said he doesn’t like the idea of his own children going to a school with heightened security, “but that’s increasingly the reality we live in.”
He called the Georgia shootings a “terrible tragedy” and said the families of Winder, Georgia, need prayers and sympathy.
Earlier this year, Vice President Kamala HarrisDemocratic presidential candidate Jenson Button toured the blood-stained Florida school building where the 2018 Parkland High School massacre took place. She then announced a program to help states with laws that allow police to temporarily seize guns from people judges have deemed dangerous.
Harris, who heads the new White House Office on Gun Violence Prevention, has supported both stricter gun control, such as banning the sale of AR-15s and similar rifles, and better school security, such as ensuring that classroom doors do not lock from the outside as they did in Parkland.
