It remains to be seen whether LSU teammates Jayden Daniels or Malik Nabers will be voted NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, but they received a harsh reprimand this week.
Daniels, the second overall pick of the Washington Commanders, and Nabers, the sixth overall pick of the New York Giants, made headlines in May when Nabers let slip that they had made a personal $10,000 bet on which of them would win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
The NFL quickly rescinded the bet once it became public, as it has become quite sensitive about violations of its gambling policy. But that wasn’t the end for Daniels and Nabers.
NFL executive Jeff Miller revealed to Mark Maske of the Washington Post that the duo had attended several training sessions on the dangers of gambling for modern NFL players:
“As you know, they canceled that bet. The league addressed the issue directly with the NFL Players Association, with both teams and with both players to make sure they understood the policy.”
“They’ve had several training sessions since then. And… because of all the work that’s been done, I think we’re happy with the resolution.”
Those sessions probably weren’t the most enjoyable parts of the recruiting process, especially for Daniels, the one who kept his mouth shut.
As things stand, Daniels and Nabers both have very good odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Daniels, who was named the Commanders’ starting quarterback earlier this week, has the second-best odds to win the award at +500, behind first-round pick Caleb Williams (+130). Nabers is fifth on the list at +1300 and should be an integral part of whatever the Giants’ passing attack is.
You can use these odds, but not them.
