IPL Live Updates ‘I can’t see why Umesh wouldn’t do well for India in T20 cricket’: Tim Southee

In 2008, when Tim Southee was making waves in competitive cricket at the age of 19, Umesh Yadav only started considering a career in the game. Nearly a decade and a half later, a year younger than Umesh and 366 international wickets, Southee is so impressed with the bowling of his Kolkata Knight Riders teammate in IPL-15 that New Zealand players are backing him to wear the India jersey again . The shortest format, which last played T20Is more than three years ago.

“I am a fan of Umesh, he is a tremendous bowler. I was lucky to share the new ball with him when we both played at RCB,” Saudi said in an interview to PTI.

“The way he was managed suits Umesh’s bowling style. If he keeps on performing like he has been doing then I don’t understand why he won’t do well for India in T20 cricket.

The 34-year-old Umesh has been quite effective for KKR this season with excellent line and length, leading to significant breakthroughs in the powerplays. He has so far taken 10 wickets in five matches at an economy of 6.60, while he has bowled the most number of dot balls (62).

His scalps include Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma inside the powerplay, while against Punjab Kings, he bowled them out for 137 in the middle overs with a magical double-wicket maiden.

In the auction, Umesh was bought by KKR for his base price of Rs 2 crore.

Giving credit to the team’s think tank for Umesh’s best performance, the 33-year-old Kiwi said the team has benefited from it.

He said, ‘The way KKR used him is fantastic. (Head Coach) Brendon (McCullum) and (Captain) Shreyas (Iyer) have clearly used him as an attacking weapon with the new ball, maximizing his strength with the new ball and in the middle overs. Tried to take wickets. Steps a little easier.

“His start in the tournament has been very strong. Starting to bowl with some great bowlers and someone you wouldn’t normally deal with is the beauty of this tournament. You are able to open the bowling with the best Indian fast bowler.

With Australia’s premier fast bowler Pat Cummins leading the pace attack, and Sunil Narine and Varun Chakraborty handling the spin department, KKR have a mix of their base bowling department, Southee said.

“It’s really exciting. You look at the experience and the pace that all three have and then we bring to the fore the exciting talent of young Indian bowlers that we have.

“Also you have two great mystery spinners in the game, so I think as a bowling attack all the bases are covered.

Rasikh Salam, who plays his first game on the second day, is a very skilled bowler and can swing the ball both ways. Then there is Ashok (Sharma).

“It is always eye opener when you come to India and see these young Indian talented people. They are asking some tough questions which are great to see,” concluded Saudi.
