IGNOU will launch a three-year special degree program for ‘firefighters’

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will launch a three-year skills-based bachelor’s degree program to recognize skill training for firefighters serving in the Armed Forces under the Central Government’s Agneepath Yojana.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Education on Wednesday states that the Union Cabinet on June 14 approved an attractive recruitment scheme for Indian youth to serve in the Armed Forces called Agneepath and the youth selected under this scheme Will be known as Agneepath allows patriotic and motivated youth to serve in the armed forces for a period of four years. The Agneepath scheme is designed to enable the youth profile of the armed forces.

The program aims to prepare defense personnel for jobs in the civilian sector. To enhance the future career prospects of firefighters and to equip them for various job roles in the civil sector, the Ministry of Education is launching a special, three-year skills-based bachelor’s degree program for the defense personnel Recognize the skill training they received during their tenure in the establishments.

This program will be designed and executed by IGNOU. The firefighters will receive 50 percent of the credit required for a bachelor’s degree from skills training (technical and non-technical) and the remaining 50 percent will be in language, economics, history, political science, public administration, sociology, mathematics, education, commerce, tourism, business studies, Will come from courses covering a wide variety of subjects such as Ability Enhancement Courses in Agriculture and Astrology, Environmental Studies and Communication Skills.

The program is linked to UGC norms and the mandatory National Credit Framework / National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) under the National Education Policy 2020. It also has provision of several exit points. Graduation certificate on successful completion of first year courses, graduate diploma on successful completion of first and second year courses. Degrees will be awarded on completion of all courses within a time limit of three years.

The framework of the program has been duly recognized by the concerned regulatory bodies – All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) and UGC. The degree will be awarded by IGNOU in accordance with UGC Nomination (BA; B Com; BA (Professional); BA (Tourism Management). This course will be recognized not only in India but also abroad in the field of employment and education.

The Army, Navy and Air Force will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IGNOU for the implementation of the plan.
