What exactly is flatulence?

A feeling of tightness in the intestines and an excessive feeling of fullness are usually the first signs of flatulence.

“Flat refers to a person’s feeling of fullness in the abdomen,” said Dr. Leila Kia, associate professor of medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and spokesperson for the American Gastroenterological Association.

“This sometimes happens when excess air becomes trapped in the digestive tract, causing discomfort – but more often it is due to an increased awareness of normal levels of gas,” she told Fox News Digital.

What causes bloating?

There are many different causes of bloating, including these common triggers.

Gas producing foods

Certain foodsFoods like beans, lentils, cruciferous vegetables, and carbonated drinks can cause bloating during digestion.

This happens either through the fermentation of gut bacteria or through fluid entering the digestive tract, said Kyle Staller, MD, director of the GI Motility Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Greater Boston.

Lactose intolerance

People diagnosed with lactose intolerance often experience bloating, bloating and diarrhea after consuming dairy products, said Staller, who is also a spokesman for the American Gastroenterological Association.
