Godzilla x Kong New Empire Roars to Record $10 Million in Box Office Previews

Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom hopes to leave a big mark as it enters theaters around the world this weekend after opening with a record $10 million in Thursday previews, the best showing ever for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse library, plus the best preview of the year so far.

Warners estimates the domestic opening weekend to be between $45 million and $50 million over the Easter period, while at least one major tracking service is counting on $50 million to $55 million. Based on the turnout overview, New Kingdom could climb noticeably higher, unless loaded first.

Overseas, New Kingdom is eyeing an $80 million launch, which would put its global launch in the $135 million range.

The preview figure leads previous entries in the Godzilla Monsterverse, with Godzilla (2014) opening to $9.3 million in previews, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) bowing to $6.3 million in previews and Kong: Skull Island (2017) raising $3.7 million.

Critics, however, are divided. The film currently has a “rotten” score of 55 percent, well below the previous film. But early polls show the public is much more enthusiastic.

Adam Wingard returned to direct the tentpole, which stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Dan Stevens. This time, the two mega-monsters decide to put aside their differences and stop a mysterious force from destroying their planet.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom has no major competition to contend with and will easily find more Easter eggs than other films, including the new ghost hunters film, which debuted last weekend.
