WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Republican Representative Liz Cheney On Wednesday, she said she would endorse Kamala Harris for president, ending weeks of speculation about the extent to which the member of a Republican dynasty turned Trump critic would fully embrace the Democratic ticket.
Cheney, who co-chaired the House investigation in the January 6, 2021, attackwho became a vocal critic of Trump and was ousted from the 2022 Republican primary in Wyoming as a result, made her announcement at an event at Duke University. In a video posted to the social network X, she ended by discussing the “danger” she believes Trump still poses to the country.
“I don’t think we have the luxury of putting candidates on the ballot, especially in key states,” she said. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I’ve thought a lot about this. Because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, I’m voting for Kamala Harris.”
The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney is perhaps the most prominent Republican critic of Trump. She joins fellow Republicans like her former January 6 Committee member, former Rep. Adam Kinzinger and former Rep. Denver Riggleman, among Harris’ supporters. More than 200 alumni Members of the Bush administration and former staffers of the Republican presidential campaigns of Senators John McCain and Mitt Romney also announced their support for Harris last week.
Cheney was a member of the House Republican leadership at the time of the January 6 attack, but she broke with most of her colleagues over Trump’s responsibility. She lost her leadership position and was one of the few Republicans seeking a seat on the January 6 Committee, which was appointed by Democrats who controlled the House at the time.
