Former ‘Boy Meets World’ Actress Danielle Fishel Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis

A boy meets the world Former student Danielle Fishel has revealed she is suffering from breast cancer.

At the beginning of the last episode of the podcast The Pod Meets the WorldThe actress shared: “I was recently diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, a form of breast cancer.” She explained that it was detected “very, very, very early; it’s technically stage zero.”

Fishel assured listeners that she’s “going to be fine,” as she will undergo surgery to remove her tonsil and receive follow-up treatment. “I’ve had to make a lot of decisions in the last few days,” she said.

“The only reason I’m telling you this is because if you’ve ever had those thoughts in your life where someone close to you gets diagnosed with cancer, somewhere in the back of your mind you’re thinking, ‘What would I do if that were me? What would I do in that situation?’” she continued. “And for some reason, in that situation, I always thought, ‘I would suffer in silence. I would get the diagnosis, I wouldn’t tell anyone.’” [except] “I had just my little group and me to deal with this situation. Then, once I got out of it, I would tell people: I went through this and this is what I did.”

She then mentioned that reading Glennon Doyle’s book helped change her mind.[In her writing]“She often talks about how a lot of people like to wait until they’ve been through something to share their experiences, so they can say, ‘Here’s the picture, here’s what I learned,’” Fishel says. “But it’s at the very beginning of the story or in the middle, in the middle, that you have the most to learn.”

Fishel then shared the news with her close family and was only going to tell “a select few friends,” including her co-hosts Rider Strong and Will Friedle. She eventually realized that the more people she told about her diagnosis, the more she discovered that many people had shared their experiences of themselves or their loved ones being diagnosed with cancer.

“The only reason I got this cancer when it was still stage zero is because the day I got a text message that my annual mammogram was coming up, I made an appointment,” she said. The actress stressed the importance of taking time out of her busy schedule to get a checkup. “If it’s time for your appointment, [or] “If you’ve never had an appointment before, go for it,” she urged listeners. “If you’re going to find out you have cancer, get it at stage zero if possible.”

Fishel also noted that while she “doesn’t have all the answers yet” and is exploring her treatment options, she wanted to update listeners as it’s possible some projects planned for the podcast may have to be put on hold depending on the treatment she’s undergoing.
