Classification Salary Range: $4,394 – $7,950 per month

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,394 – $5,570 per month

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm, unless otherwise notified

The Aerospace Engineering department is one of seven ABET accredited academic departments within the College of Engineering. The Department of Aerospace Engineering provides a comprehensive education in aerospace engineering, with studies in aerodynamics, astrodynamics, structures, propulsion, flight mechanics, systems engineering, project management, and aerospace vehicle design. The department provides two emphasis areas-Aeronautics and Astronautics-each presented using Cal Poly Pomona’s learn-by-doing, hands-on engineering approach to simulate the aerospace industry culture. The department serves over 700 undergraduate students with 8 tenured faculty and 2 staff and has been in continuous operation for over 65 years. Most of our graduate’s work in the aerospace industry and government-related agencies, with some having become managers, directors, US patent holders, VPs, company founders, presidents, and CEOs.

The mission of the College of Engineering is to produce well-qualified engineering graduates who are ready for immediate and productive entry into the workforce or for graduate studies. The college provides practice-oriented education based on sound engineering principles and applications, while emphasizing collaboration, communication, and creative skills needed to be leaders in a global society.


Design, Maintain, and Install Equipment

  • Develop equipment design and fabrication, maintain/repair and install department equipment, and annually inventory to verify with campus records.
  • Equipment includes: high and low speed wind tunnels, PIV system, pressure scanners, electrical and hydraulic materials testing equipment, shakers, feedback controls, autoclave, 3D metal and plastic printers, high pressure gas systems, computer data acquisition systems, jet engine test cell, trailers, and general use instrumentation and tooling.
  • Coordinate laboratory setup of equipment providing necessary equipment connections in conjunction with Facilities (e.g., compressed air, electrical, water, equipment cooling, IT data and internet connections, etc.).
  • Develop analysis for the location and suitability of equipment. Coordinate existing equipment disposal/relocation and general lab refurbishment. Load and unload equipment and materials using forklifts, liftgates, and hand trucks.
  • Design and construct specialized equipment for laboratory courses.
  • Arrange for university or contractor services for modification or repairs of laboratory infrastructure and equipment

Support Faculty and Students

  • Consult with faculty lab directors for equipment purchases, lab layouts, and lab safety.
  • Assist and consult with faculty for course, senior, and research projects.
  • Check in/out, document, and maintain equipment for student senior and research projects.
  • Offer training students in the safe use of equipment.
  • Demonstrate proper use of equipment to classes.
  • Be available and accessible to help instructors solve problems with equipment during lab sessions.
  • Develop equipment of a specialized nature to assist students and faculty.

Student Assistants

  • Recruit, train, and supervise student assistants working in the department labs.
  • Prepare student assistant work schedules. Oversee and assign work to student assistants.

Other Duties

  • Provide technical support to the dean’s office and department chair to develop plans for lab upgrades, equipment, and lab assessment.
  • Purchase and acquire equipment, supplies, and consumables as needed using purchase orders and P-cards.
  • Reconcile P-card purchases each month Shared services with other department Equipment Technicians when needed and/or appropriate and/or available.


  • Comprehensive knowledge of the methods. materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance. repair and operation of equipment in the area of specialization; thorough knowledge of equipment design theory; knowledge of drafting techniques: thorough knowledge of repair, maintenance, troubleshooting and overhaul.
  • Ability to apply previous experience and knowledge to the design of new applications; ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the work of technical projects; ability to review and prepare specifications for technical equipment; ability to design, fabricate, and assemble devices; ability to coordinate equipment repair performed by other specialists; ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed; ability to install. replace, repair, and maintain a wide variety of equipment for the area of job assignment; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; ability to make arithmetic computations where required.
  • 3 years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned, including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment.
  • 2 years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related equipment experience as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • 2 years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned. Completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.


  • A basic understanding of aeronautical and astronautical theory.
  • Experience with high and low speed wind tunnels.
  • Experience in basic electronic and mechanical design.
  • B.S. degree in engineering, engineering technology or a related science.
  • Forklift and hand truck certification
