Convict Salah Abdeslam sentenced to the harshest sentence in French history

A French court has found Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the November 2015 terrorist attack in the capital Paris, guilty of terrorism and murder. The court has sentenced him to the harshest sentence in the history of France. Salah Abdeslam will have to spend his entire life in jail.

130 people were killed in this terrorist attack. The court has also convicted 19 other people in the case. Six of them are believed to have died. For the past nine months, the victims, journalists and relatives of the deceased have been gathering in the courtroom specially set up for the hearing of the case in Paris. The attack is considered the most heinous in French history since World War II. The attacks took place on November 13, 2015 in France at various locations, including bars, restaurants, the National Football Stadium and a music venue. Hundreds of people were also injured.

During the trial, Abdeslam described himself as a “soldier” of the terrorist organization Islamic State. Abdeslam later apologized to the victims, saying he was not a murderer and that it would be unfair to convict him of murder. Abdeslam had also claimed that on the night of the attacks he had decided not to blow up his suicide jacket. However, the evidence presented in court later made it clear that the jacket did not actually explode because of a malfunction.

According to the court decision, Abdeslam will have to spend his entire life in jail. According to French law, he can apply for parole only after serving 30 years.
