On my recent jam-packed summer trip to Europe—which included a fabulous time in London and a dance party in the South of France—I managed to squeeze in time to get back in shape at one of Switzerland’s best new medical spas.
There are many types of medical spas in Europe, including Long live Mayr in Austria (which I visited in 2021), The Lanserhof In Germany, SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain and — now — Chenot Palace in Weggis on the beautiful Lake Lucerne in Switzerland.
I was looking forward to coming to Switzerland to test the new Chenot practice in Weggis. The excellent Chenot method, created by Henri Chenot in 1970, combines traditional Chinese practices with Western medicine and also relies heavily on the concept of hormesis.
Hormesis is a state in which controlled stressors such as heat, cold, caloric restriction, and high and low oxygen levels trigger adaptive responses and make the body more resilient to future stress. All I know is that it works on your body. I never feel better than after a stay at Chenot.
The Chenot Method has now entered a new scientific era with Dr. George Gaitanos, Chenot’s Chief Operating and Scientific Officer. He has added a wealth of science and technology to ensure that the treatments are as cutting-edge and modern as possible. This is a cut above every other medical spa I’ve visited. Think about it: where else can you get medical expertise in a glamorous hotel setting with people who truly care about your well-being? The team he has assembled in a picture-perfect lakeside location is unbeatable.
At Chenot, the focus is on healthy lifespan, that is, the period of our lives spent in good health. You can control 90% of your healthy lifespan, and your genetic makeup only determines 10% of that. So Chenot’s goal is to add life to your years. They believe that aging should not mean declining health, which is why they focus on prevention rather than treating diseases and symptoms.
Last year I had a serious health scare. I had sepsis following a tooth extraction and implant and two days later I was fighting for my life at St. John’s in Santa Monica. The sepsis attached itself to my total knee replacement and Dr. Jason Snibbe had to perform emergency surgery on my knee. I was then on a drip of antibiotics for six months under the care of Dr. Otto Yang, an infectious disease specialist at UCLA. They saved my life. So after a 2023 that included emergency surgery, antibiotics and painkillers, you want to cleanse all that toxicity from your body. This time at Weggis was a lifeline to better health for me.
My friend, philanthropist Jamie Tisch, had already visited the center during the Covid period, when it first opened, and told me, “At Chenot, I discovered a sense of peace and serenity that rejuvenated my body and soul. The clinicians and staff are world-class and offer a variety of personalized treatments and therapies to meet your specific needs. The real bonus…
