NFL fans appear to have been left baffled by a surprising kissing cam segment during preseason action between the Los Angeles Chargers and the city Rams.
At the Chargers’ home game at SoFi Stadium on Saturday, the kissing cam segment aired on overhead screens in the second quarter and took viewers on an emotional roller coaster. For the final couple to be introduced, a man wearing Rams receiver Puka Nacua’s jersey motioned for the camera to wait before getting down on one knee while holding a ring box. The stadium announcer told fans it was a marriage proposal, prompting loud cheers.
However, the fan’s girlfriend didn’t immediately seem ready for a life of marital bliss and appeared to tell him not to propose, prompting audible surprised reactions from the crowd. To top it all off, another guest then appeared to bump into the abandoned fan and inadvertently spilled nachos and a drink on his jersey, prompting another shocked reaction from the crowd.
Images of the moment have gone viral on social media, with a user “A horrible scene of all time at the Chargers game tonight,” the reporter wrote. Many commenters on the platform noted that the segment appeared to have been faked.
Indeed, the participants can rest assured: the fan did not actually experience a nightmarish marriage proposal attempt, as a source familiar with the situation recounts. The Hollywood Reporter that the scene was staged. The “couple” were actually played by two match presentation assistants who help the team on match day. They are not actors and have full-time jobs elsewhere.
A member of the venue’s security team said THR that the blow had taken her by surprise and that she had not expected it.
The Rams beat the Chargers 13-9 in a game that featured Rams backup quarterback Stetson Bennett starting against Chargers backup quarterback Easton Stick. The 2024 NFL season begins September 5.
