Can Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Pull Off the Barbenheimer 2.0?

The last time a married couple had their film top the domestic box office was 34 years ago. In 1990, Bruce Willis Die Hard 2 remained at the top of the charts in its second weekend with $14.5 million, and Demi Moore Ghost opened in second place with $12.2 million, adjusted for inflation.

Get ready to dust off that statistic. This weekend, Ryan Reynolds’ blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine will remain No. 1 in its third weekend, with $50 million to $60 million. His wife, Blake Lively, is virtually guaranteed to boast second place with her new film, Columbia and Wayfarer’s It ends with us. (Lionsgate’s big budget film Borders is also opening, but it looks like a $10-15 million failure).

Some are billing the two Reynolds-Lively films as a showdown, but it’s quite the opposite, according to insiders. Reynolds, a marketing expert, and Lively are hoping that these two very different films will result in a Barbenheimer moment where both films are front and center. Exhibitors are much more optimistic due to the strength of pre-sales and Lively’s fan base. Additionally, it is the first Hoover book to be adapted for the big screen. The film is directed by Baldoni and cost a relatively modest $25 million to produce before release.

Reynolds and Lively support each other in their films, and it’s perhaps no coincidence that they’ve opened up so much to each other.
