SECI invites bids for 1,000 MW independent battery storage system

The State-run Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has invited bids for setting up pilot projects of 500 MW (1,000 MWh) Independent Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) under the Tariff-Based Global Competitive Bidding Process. The last date for submission of bids is June 10. The SECI issued a Request for Selection (RFS) on Wednesday and the agency will finalize the Battery Power Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) after the successful bidder is determined. Each 500 MWh project capacity will be in the vicinity of Fatehgarh-III substations in the ISTS network in Rajasthan. SECI has attracted interest from prospective purchasing firms across the country to use energy storage systems on an “on-demand” basis to suit their needs during peak and off-peak hours. In view of the above, the SECI hereby invites proposals for the establishment of independent BESS’s ISTS-connected pilot projects for a total storage capacity of 1,000 MWh (500 MW x 2 hours), ”the agency said in the bid document. The energy storage facility procured by SECI is set to be made on behalf of various purchasing companies, the details of which will be communicated at a later date. According to NITI Commission studies, India’s battery storage market is projected to exceed 1,000 GWh by 2030, translating to a cumulative market size of $ 250 billion, with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) also estimating 500 GW for expansion and consolidation. Non-fossil fuel capacity will require 27 GW (108 GWh) of battery storage by 2030. As of December 2021, SECI has successfully delivered more than 50 GW of renewable capacity nationwide, including 32.69 GW of solar power, 12.73 GW of wind power and 5.35 GW of hybrid power. In addition, it owns 21 MW of operational Capex projects under its ownership and the company is looking to expand its portfolio on renewable energy. These tenders are part of India’s transition to clean energy sources. India aims to have an installed RE capacity of 175 GW (GW) by 2022 and is one of the largest RE programs in the world. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to increase the country’s RE capacity to 500 GW by 2030. The government has also pledged to increase the contribution of RE sources in power generation to more than 50 per cent by the end of this decade, with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2070.
