Nine Inch Nails, the band led by musician Trent Reznor, composes the music for Tron: AresDisney announced Friday at D23.
The reveal came during a first look at the sci-fi film, which is being directed by Jared Leto and produced by Joachim Ronning.
And featured some excerpts from the score work done so far. The previous episode, Tron: Legacyhad a genre-defining Daft Punk soundtrack, so when it came to the new film, the bar was set high.
Reznor formed NIN in the late 1980s as an industrial hard rock band, although for the albums, Reznor himself wrote and played instruments. However, when NIN toured, the frontman would assemble members who would come and go. The band was hugely influential in the 1990s, racking up multiple Grammy nominations and a few wins for the songs “Wish” and “Happiness in Slavery.”
Reznor first branched out into film scoring in 2010 when he teamed up with Atticus Ross for David Fincher’s film. The social network. They kicked off a duo that lasted through many of Fincher’s films. The duo’s most recent output included composing for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chaotic Mutations And The challengers.
Ross became an official member of NIN in 2016.
When the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, it had six current and former members: Ross, Robin Finck, Chris Vrenna, Danny Lohner, Ilan Rubin and Allessandro Cortini.
“Technology and artificial intelligence are everywhere in our lives,” said Jeff Bridges, one of the stars of the original 1982 film, who returns for this installment. “What a perfect time to revisit that world. Or, have that world visit us, because that’s what happens in this movie.”
After the appearance of cast members Jared Leto, Evan Peters and Greta Lee, mind-blowing images were shown. After that, a red laser revealed the iconic NIN logo, to the cheers of the crowd. The stage doors opened to reveal two characters, Reznor and Ross.
