Amid rising needs and starvation, the lives of refugees are in turmoil

World Food Program David Beazley, Executive Director (WFP), said, “As global hunger increases, resources are running out to provide food for all families who need it. WFP Is in dire need of help. As such, we are forced to make the heartbreaking decision to cut back on the food rations of those refugees who depend on us for their survival. ”

The growing problem in Africa

The disappointing warning comes at a time when the UN Food Aid Agency has already been forced to cut back on food supplies to refugees in all its campaigns.

In East Africa, food cuts of up to 50 percent have affected three-quarters of the refugees supported by the Food Agency, with people living in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda being the hardest hit.

Hunger in West Africa has reached record highs in a decade. Severe funding shortages there have forced WFP to cut back on food for refugees living in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and the Niger.

The UN Food Agency, meanwhile, is assisting an average of 500,000 refugees each year in South Africa.

Despite generous funding by donors, resources are inadequate to meet the basic needs of refugee families, and immediate disruptions are expected in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

David Beazley warned that “without immediate new funding to help refugees – in these weakest and most forgotten groups in the world – many starving people will die.”

WFP provides food and cash assistance to Mali refugees in the Burkina Faso town of Dori in the Sahel region.

Troubled by the lack of funding, the food agency is being forced to prioritize relief items to ensure that important food items reach vulnerable families first. This is often unable to help the refugees for whom food assistance is the difference between life and death.

While the WFP is forced to cut back on food supplies due to limited resources, an additional 6 million refugees have fled Ukraine this year.

For those displaced from Ukraine, WFP in Moldova has delivered approximately 475,000 doses of hot food to affected families in 31 different regions.

At the same time, due to the catastrophic conflict and climate extremes, the refugees are suffering the most.

Although the immediate needs of refugees remain WFP’s top concern, there is now a greater need than ever for continued investment in programs that promote the self-reliance of the refugee population.

WFP is working with partners and governments to create and support livelihood and resilience programs for refugees.

In 2021, the United Nations agency provided assistance to about one million refugees worldwide.
