Amazon CEO confirms more layoffs to come in early 2023

San Francisco: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has warned employees that there will be more layoffs at the company in early 2023 “as executives continue to make adjustments”.

The e-commerce giant publicly confirmed layoffs on Wednesday and now Jassy has said more layoffs are coming as Amazon’s annual planning process drags into the new year.

“These decisions will be shared with affected employees and organizations in early 2023,” he said in a statement late Thursday.

“We have yet to determine exactly how many other roles will be affected (we know there will be reductions across our stores and PXT organizations), but each lead will communicate to their respective teams when we have the details,” Sassy added.

Amazon will prioritize direct communication with affected employees before making broad public or internal announcements.

“This year’s exam is more difficult due to the fact that the economy remains in a difficult situation and that we have been hiring quickly in recent years,” said Jassy.

The company has not revealed the exact number of employees affected, although earlier reports put the number at 10,000 employees, or 3% of its workforce.

The massive job cuts hit several divisions, particularly virtual assistant business Alexa and cloud gaming unit Luna.

“We communicated the difficult decision to cut a number of positions in our Devices and Books businesses, and also announced a voluntary reduction offer for certain employees in our People, Experience, and Technology (PXT) organization,” added Jassy. .

“I’ve been in this position for about a year and a half, and this is without a doubt the most difficult decision we’ve made during that time,” added the Amazon CEO.

Dave Limp, senior vice president of devices and services, also wrote an internal post, stating that “after a series of extensive reviews, we have recently decided to consolidate certain teams and programs.”

“One of the consequences of these decisions is that certain roles will no longer be needed,” Limp said.
