2024 MTV VMAs postponed to September 10-11 to avoid debate conflicts

The 2024 MTV VMAs are being moved up one day to Wednesday, September 11, instead of the previously announced Tuesday, September 10. The move is intended to avoid the VMAs airing in front of the September 10 presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The 2024 VMAs will continue to take place at UBS Arena on Long Island in New York and will air live on MTV at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Additionally, on Monday, the VMAs announced the first round of artists set to perform at this year’s awards show, including Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro.

Last week, the 2024 VMAs announced the nominees for this year’s awards. Taylor Swift leads the way with 10 nominations, followed by Post Malone with nine and Ariana Grande, Eminem and Carpenter with six each. GloRilla and Alejandro each received three nominations while first-time nominee Chappell Roan is up for Best New Artist and MTV Push Performance of the Year. Cabello is nominated for Best Pop.

Carpenter will make her VMAs main stage debut this year after performing on the pre-show in 2012. Cabello will be performing at the VMAs for the third time, performing a song from her fourth studio album, C, kisses kissesChappell Roan will make his VMA stage debut at an awards show. GloRilla will make his VMA debut while Alejandro will also deliver a debut performance from his upcoming fifth studio album.

ABC, which hosts the presidential debate, revealed last week that Harris and Trump had agreed to participate in the Sept. 10 debate, which had been in doubt after Trump appeared reluctant to participate in a May showdown with President Joe Biden, then the Democratic presidential nominee. Biden dropped his reelection bid last month and endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee. Last week, she secured the delegates needed to be the Democratic nominee.
